To practice getting a correct exposure and proper focus when taking self portraits. Using timers, manual focus, and live view modes on the camera.
Tips
Tip #1: Bring Something to Focus On. Height doesn’t matter so much as distance, but try to match it to yourself as best as you can for accuracy.
Tip #2: Use Both Auto and Manual Focus. First, focus on your stand-in object using auto focus. Then, with the object still in focus, switch your lens to manual focus.
Tip #3: Set the Timer. Give yourself plenty of time to get in position and figure out what you’re doing
Tip #4: Use a tripod. Seriously. While it’s possible to get good photos while you’re hanging on to your camera at arms-length, it’s a lot easier if you’ve got the freedom to move around a bit.
